BlogHer Voices Of The Year

I was honored as one of this year's BlogHer Voices Of The Year (VOTY).  My fellow VOTY readers read some profoundly moving posts (and some hysterically funny ones, too).  It was a real treat to be able to hear such well-written stories.

If you would like to read the post that was selected to represent me as a Voice Of The Year you can find it here.

My deepest thanks to those of you who came up to me after the keynote ceremony to tell me how my story affected you.  People kept coming up to me and saying things like:

"My Jewish grandmother was EXACTLY the same way!"

"My Southern Black grandmother did the SAME thing to me!"

"My Italian grandmother was just as bad as yours!"

The wonderful thing about your words was that I realized that a story I thought was a uniquely Latino-American one was more about the dynamic between a grandmother and her granddaughter than about the culture being represented.  I loved that realization.  Made me feel like it was a story that perhaps all women who had a similar dynamic with their grandmothers could relate to.

This weekend went by in a whirlwind because I was so nervous about going up there to read, but I got to meet some truly amazing women that I now feel personally connected to.  This weekend was a truly wonderful experience for me.

Thank you, BlogHer, for the honor.

So proud of you! My abuelita was the exact same way! Thankfully I was a tomboy and burned off those calories pretty quickly! :)
